BOXES Recycled tissue boxes can make a doll's bed, doll's house, train, zoo, cave, caravan and posting box. The box that the new refrigerator came in can make a cubby house. Packing boxes can be made into a ball box by inserting used post office tubes across so balls can be rolled through from one side to the other. Paint or paste on boxes. Make cars, trucks and buses by attaching shoulder straps

DANCING Put on some music - pop, classical, bush or traditional. Add props such as ribbons, scarves or musical instruments.

DRAWING Offer short and stubby crayons, flat crayon blocks, dry pastels or thick chalk. Vary locations - tables, floor, easels, inside and out. Try different coloured paper, box lids and cardboard off-cuts. Use the back of large charts for group drawings

GLUE Cornflour glue recipe: Put three heaped tblspns cornflour in a measuring jug. Add small amount of water and mix until just runny. Quickly add 500 ml boiling water while stirring briskly.

HOBBY HORSES Make one from a long cylinder and socks, ribbons, foam. Use in songs about horses.

KITES Use paper bags, corrugated card, tie with wool (safer than string). Keep wood short.

LEAVES Put in a big baby bath on a tarp for lots of fun. Children can walk in them, look at the colours, throw them, carry them in a wheelbarrow or bags, thread them with other things or use them for collage. Demonstrate respect for this natural material - return leaves to the environment when playgroup is finished.

LUX FLAKES can be used to make finger paint and messy play. Dissolve one cup of flakes in three cups boiling water the night before use. In the morning the mixture will appear set. Whisk vigorously until frothy and doubled in quantity. Add Edicol colour (available from art supply outlets) for fun. Store in a covered container.

MUSIC Put on a tape. Put musical instruments on a rug and let children use them anytime. Play nursery rhymes and a variety of music styles. Give children ribbons to encourage them to move around.

OBSTACLE COURSE Use boxes, cushions, small tables, hoops - anything children can go over, under, up, down, behind, in front of, in and out of. Give them a little guidance if needed. They usually know their limits.

PLAYDOUGH (uncooked) Empty contents of one packet of cornflour into a bowl. Slowly add enough water to give a doughy consistency. Colour if desired. Keeps for only a few days.

PLAYGROUP CAKES Preheat moderate oven. Each child needs a margarine tub, teaspoon and paper patty case with their name on the bottom (if desired). Mix 1 tblsn SR flour, 1 tspn sugar, 1 tblspn pre-made egg/milk mix (for 12 cakes add one egg to 150mls milk). Let children mix flour and sugar. Colour if desired with a tiny speck of edicol dye. Spoon into patty pans. Bake about 15 mins.

SLIME Combine a cup of PVA glue, a cup of water and 3-4 capfuls of green food colouring in a mixing bowl. Mix all three ingredients thoroughly. Place 4 teaspoons of borax and 1/2 cup of hot water into an empty jar. Screw on the lid and shake until the borax dissolves. Add the borax mixture to the glue mixture. You will obtain very thick clumps of slime where the two mix. The glue contains polyvinyl acetate which reacts with the borax. Working with clean hands, mix and knead the concoction for about five to 10 minutes until you get a gooey consistency. For a slimier texture, add a bit more water and knead it in.

SPRAY PAINTING Put 1/4 tspn edicol dye into a spray bottle and fill it with water. Tie an old sheet onto a fence or between two chairs. To clean the sheet, soak overnight in cold water and wash in detergent the next day.

STEPPING STONES Cut several 20cm circles out of heavy plastic and put on the floor for stepping stones or for the children to rearrange.

THREADING Use wool or old shoe laces for threading. Thread cardboard cylinders, cotton reels, various plastic lids (pierce the hole using a hot skewer), felt off-cuts or pre-cut pieces of drinking straws. Don't use small objects that could cause choking if swallowed.

WATER Put some water in small bucket. Using a thick brush let the children paint brick walls, fences, paths, flowers, trees or concrete.

YOGHURT CONTAINERS Collect different sizes. Use for stacking, knocking down, nesting toys for babies, use in sand.

YACHTS can be made from waxed cartons.
